- There was a good many Landlords in this district the O'Kelly's, the O'Rourkes, the Blakes, the O'Flahertys, the Lynches and several others. The people in the Famine years were in great distress and were unable to live in their holdings or pay their rents. Anyone that was able to hold out was left in their holdings. The others were evicted and had to flock into towns or to emigrate. Some of the Landlords were not very harsh and used to help the tenants. The others were called Tyrants and used to put them out wholesale, irrespective of what would belong to them and knock down their houses and clean the land the turn it in to grazing farms for their own use. Some of the landlords got their property at the of Cromwell and held it afterwards and got the people to work as serfs. This(continues on next page)
