  1. My father often told me in my childhood of an incident which happened to his father, when out shooting in one of the fields on his farm in Ballyholey, Co. Donegal.
My grandfather like some others of his day was fond of this sport and often indulged in it, bringing home many a good bag of game. He was what they called a "crack shot."
On one occasion, when the snow was on the ground, my grandfather as usual got his gun and sallied forth. Not far from his own dwelling he espied a fine big hare near a dyke grazing peacefully and showing no signs of unrest. He took aim and shot it at once. Immediately from the other side of the dyke appeared a small old dwarfish woman who called over to him "Oh you have shot my cow" and then as quickly disappeared. From that day onwards my grandfather never lifted his gun to shoot anything again.
