There is an old man still alive who remembers getting tea as a treat on Sunday. Charlie Sharpe now aged 94 was then a young man hired with a local protestant. About this time people began making bread from flour purchased in the village in the present day oven. The ingredients are flour, buttermilk, baking soda and salt. Local reason for putting cross on scone is "to let out the steam".
Forty years ago tables were not used at all for meals at which they ate potatoes. Neither are they used in some houses still. The potatoes were teamed (taomain) from the pot to a broad shallow wickerwork basket. This basket was placed on a stool in the middle of the floor and the family gathered round it on stools or boxes.
