- (continued from previous page)weeks. The best songsters are the larks and the thrushes. The birds that do not sing are crows, jackdaws, rooks and seagulls. Rooks, crows and jackdaws caw, but the seagull emits a harsh cry. There are many stories and tales as to why the robin has a red breast, here is one of them. When Our Lord was dying on the Cross a robin came by and seeing His plight attempted to pull the thorns from His head, while doing this some drops of blood fell on his breast and from that day to this his breast is red.
