    and placed on the manure at from 9 inches to 12 inches apart.
    The plough is then used again to turn in the earth on the skillauns.
    Up to about 80 years ago wooden ploughs were used here in Coolishal.
    The middle-sized potatoes are the ones chosen for the skillauns.
    Each skillaun is cut into halves or quarters and care must be taken that each portion contains an 'eye' or two. as it is from the eye the new plants shoot up.
    The neighbours help each other in cutting and planting the skillauns.
    Five or six weeks after the planting, the drills are rolled, that is, a wooden round roller or a part of a wooden gate is got, an iron chain is attached to it and then fastened to the tackling on a horse and then this roller is laid on the drill. The horse then draws it along.
    This is done to flatten out the drill, just before the growing potatoes put their stalks above the ground.
