- Long ago the priests were not allowed to celebrate Holy Mass in the Churches like nowadays. They had to go to the mountains, to the low valleys and to the woods to offer the Holy Sacrifice. Usually at night they celebrated Holy Mass as they were afraid of the English Government to do so in day time.
Once there was an Archbishop sent from Galway to Mayo and at that time there lived an English chief in Ballycastle. Now this chief hated the Bishop so much that after a short time he had him tortured and hanged. A few days before the Bishop died he told the people that the chief would soon answer to God for his bad deeds. Shortly after the Bishop's death this English chief contracted some strange disease an no doctor could cure him.
