    They travel round from house to house with a little decorated box and some of them carry a wren in a matchbox and they sing the wren a rhyme thus:

    The wren, the wren
    The kind of all birds
    St. Stephen’s day was
    Caught in a furze
    Up with the kettle
    And down with the pan:
    Give us some money
    To bury the wren

    On New Year’s Day some people would not put a spade in the ground because they say that the crops would not grow. Some
