- Long ago the people had very different kinds of houses to what the people have now. Long ago the people build two classes of house, the "bee-hive" house and the "box" house. The walls of the "bee-hive" house were round and build of clay and rushes. The roof was of a round shape and made of hazel rods, and covered with a brownish kind of clay called "daub".
The "box" house was built in the shape of a box. Its walls were made of "daub" and lime-stone. The roof was flat and made of boards, and was covered with heath, and the floor was made of clay and withered heath. There was one chimney on it, and the fire was in the middle of the floor, and there was one room in it.
