- Long ago when money was not known any fairs were not held, but another method was used for exchanging cattle for other commodities which was called "swopping" was used. When money was known fairs were held in certain towns and villages. Ballydehob was the village where the fair was held in this locality. The fairs were held there three times in the year. After some time cattle were getting more numerous in the country and it was decided that the fairs should be held at the following dates:-one on New Years Day, one on the second of February, one on the twelvth of March, one on Easter Tuesday, one on Whit Monday, one was held on the twenty ninth of June, one on the twenty fourth of July, one on the fifteenth of August, one on the eighth of September, one on the tenth of October, one was held on the eighth of November, and one was held on the eighth of December. After some time it was observed that a great many of the fairs were held on Church Holydays, so it was decided that the fairs should be held on the third Wednesday and third Thursday of each month. A great many people attended these fairs, and ballad singers, Seán Saors, and all sorts of tricksters attended them also.
