    Dan Coppinger of Mount Hazel, Castleblakeney, Ballinasloe, County Galway can row a boat with the handles of spades as well as with oars.

    There are five forges in the parish of Ballymacward. The smiths are Martin Wade of Tample, Woodlawn, County Galway, Pat Walsh of Gurteen, Woodlawn, County Galway, Brian Follan of Shanballard, Gurteen, Woodlawn, County Galway, Patrick Keane of Glantane, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway, Martin Egan of Attyregan, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway. All their ancestors were smiths. The forges are near cross-roads and streams. Martin Wades forge is thatched with rushes. Patrick Walshe's was thatched until about two months ago when it was burned and then he put a timber roof on it. There is a timber roof on Patrick Keanes, and Martin Egan's is roofed with timber. There is a tin roof on Brian Follans. There is one fireplace in each one of them. The bellows are made of leather and timber with a big shaft at the end of the bellows and you pull it down and it blows the fire. The tools the smith uses are the anvil, hammer, tongs, raspknife, pincers, sledge, cutter grinding stone, nails and bellows. The smith shoes horses, ponys, asses and wheels.

    There are two tailors in the district now John Tuohy Senior and John Tuohy junior of Ballygreaney, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway. They work in the home and they do not go from house to house like that of former years. They do not stock cloth. Cloth is not spun and woven locally.
    The implements used by the tailor are a machine, an iron and a pressing board. Shirts are made in the homes. They are usually made from flannette. Socks and stockings are knitted in the homes also. The thread is spun in some houses. there are about five spinning wheels in the district. There is one at Dempseys, Colemanstown, Ballinasloe, County Galway. There is one at Connallens, Cloonkeen Kerrill, Colemanstown, Ballinasloe, County Galway. There is one at Scarrys Gurteen, Woodlawn, County Galway. Mary Flannery of Colemanstown owns one, Mrs. Bolton of Ballygreaney, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway has one Scarrys and Dempseys are in use still. Black clothes are worn at a funeral or elso a diamond on the shoulder.

    There was a hurling match a replay between Galway and Waterford at Dungarven in 1924, it ended in a draw.
    Soon after the throw in Waterford scored a goal. Galway attacked and scored a goal. The play was beginning to get exciting as Waterford attacked and scored a goal. It was a great effort by the Waterford forwards. Galway attacked and scored a point. It was a great Galway defence that held out against the Waterford attack did pierce the Galway defence for a goal.     In James Flanagans land, Ballyglass Kilsalla Castlerea there is a well called "Gaire Lucháis". Their is an old bush in Michael Hartes land it is called Crann an Oir it is called this because it is said that gold is hid under it it is in the village of Ballyglass, Kilsalla Co Galway.

    Oranmore Boys' school. It is said that a soldier and his horse are supposed to have been buried here. The soldier mounted on his horse was returning from the battle at Ballanageeha and they were thrown and killed. Some of the older people say the place is haunted.

    Cloch na Breitheimh:- There is a small hill on the road from Oranmore to Galway in the townland of Cartroon about 1 1/2 miles from Oranmore. It gets the name (above) from the following story. "Once a law case was to be decided in Galway - two men from the town of Galway were fishing from a boat in the bay. One of the men fell into the water, and was drowning. The other man, trying to save him, threw to the man in the water his fishing line. He saved the man but the hook caught in his eye. He lost the eye and he then sued the man who saved him, for compensation for the loss of the eye. One day as the judge (who was travelling by coach to Galway) arrived at this hill, he noticed some small boys on the hill. He went towards them and asked them what they were doing. They told him that they were trying the case between the two men. He then asked the boy who was the judge what his decision was. The boy said that the man ought to be taken out in the boat to the same place and thrown into the water and if he was able to

    1 During the Penal days all the priests had to hide from the English. In Ballygreaney there was a priest hiding in Michael Mullin's field. He used to say mass in a valley near by. The people kept the secret quiet about where the priest was hiding. When the English could not catch the priest they offered ten pounds for the priest's head.

    2 in Mount Hazel, Castleblakeney, Ballinasloe, County Galway there was a priest killed while saying mass in a little church by the English during the Penal days. There were a number of people at mass but the English let them go with a caution. The remains of the old church are there yet. There was a church in Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway in the Penal times. It was a little thatched church but it was in use until the new one was built.
