  1. Laoghaire was monarch or chief king of Erin. He was the son of the King Niall who had five hostages from the kings in Ireland and four from four other kingdoms, as pledges of support and submission to his supremacy, and who had first brought St. Patrick as a captive into Erin. Soon after the landing of the Saint and his missionaries there was held at Tara a feast by the monarch and his court.
