  1. James Carroll a very strong man who was very fond of strong drink lived in Church St, Cootehill. He served in the Great War.
    He swam from George's Strand on the Bellamont side of the Beck Lake to Dartery Cottage on the Dartery side & back again. It is a two mile swim.
    One day when he was drunk he lay on the sea shore at Dundalk. The tide came in & drowned him. He was then about 36 years old.
