They had just finished the rosary and over heard the soldier's conversation.
They were filled with terror for they knew that the priest would be caught in the act of saying Mass, and would be killed.
Maura Mc Cusker then said, "In the name of God Reggy set fire to the rick of hay, and Father Dwyer, Antonio ONeill and a few worshippers that will be at Mass will see the blaze and know there is danger coming and they will hide and escape".
Reggy OSullivan made his granny stay in the house, and went out himself to raise the alarm. She knelt down again and commenced saying the rosary.
Reggy set fire to the large rick of hay and the light that came from it illuminated the whole mountain face. Next he went over and commenced ringing the Drumberg bell. Boom-m, Boom-m, Boom-m.
Slowly and solemnly the old bell rang out the last three strokes as the shots were fired on Aughrim hills. Next day Peggy heard that the priest had escaped and would have been caught only for the ringing of Drumderg bell but the two oxen were killed by the angry officer.
