  1. In the years 1844 and 1845 the potatoes were very plentiful, and the farmers got very careless about them. The potatoes were so plentiful that they were carted to the roadside, and left there. On the following year when the potatoes were growing, the stalks began to wither. When the farmers went to plough them out later, there were no potatoes under the stalks.
