  1. Long ago there were many old hedge-schools in existance in Ireland,. There were called hedge-schools because the school masters had to teach under the trees and in old stables. The children had to bring a sod of turf and a penny if they could afford it.
    The scholar that did not bring them would get a slap.
    The best scholar was to stand at the head of the class and so on. The people of the neighbourhood used to feed the school-master and he in the farm-houses during the Winter.
    The children received very little education as the master's them-selves were not very well educated.
