  2. Before the threshing machines came into use people used to thresh their corn with a flail. This was made from a fairly thick hazel stick called a hand staff and a thinner stick of holly called a bolkeen. A rod was bent and tied to the end of these. It was hawthorn and they were joined together with an ell skin. Each sheaf was then beaten until the grain was out of it.
    It was then put in a riddle and shaken until all the straws were shaken away. It was then ready for
