    The men ran into the byre to turn them out but they could not, because the cows were so frightened.
    The small-pox raged in this district for years and years. A great many people had it. It came from poverty. Some people were so badly marked you could not know their faces at all. So many people died and were in such pain that it was made law that each one had to be vaccinated.
