    The stranger whose name was Blake accepted the proposal with joy, and praised the host Tom Flanagan, as a model of kind-heartedness, and said that all he wanted was a bed and a bit of supper, and that so long as he got them he did not care whether it was in an nobleman's castle or in a labourer's cottage.
    The house referred to was built upon a steep hill opposite the inn, from which it was seperated by that narrow little wood, the remains of which stand at the present day. Owing to its pleasant situation it was kept in good repair, and well furnished by its owner, Captain Kelly, who sometimes used it as a "hunting box", in which he and his companions of the chase feasted by day, but as soon as the stars began to twinkle in the sky the company would depart in order to avoid the ghost which was said to haunt the house, and which was only visible by night.
    Night was already falling dark and gloomy as Tom and Blake reached the front gates of the house, Tom carrying in one hand a basketfull of provisions whilst he carried in the other a pair of candles. When Blake noticed the candles he remarked:
