The eldest lad caught the bird and brought it home. The old mother as bad as she was, could no feel it in her heart to harm the little bird when she saw how nice it was. "The best thing ye can do," she told them, "is to bring it to the king who lives nearby and he is sure to give ye a nice present for it. Off they set to the king and gave him the bird. The king held it up in his hands to view it and every time he would give the bird a twist it used to flutter its wings. After a good while the king notices some writings in his wings and made out what it was.
Under one wing was written, "any one that eats my heart will be married to the daughter of the king of France." Under the other wing was written, "anyone that eats my gizzard will have a purse of gold under his head every morning." The two fellows went to Dublin the next day, got lodgings and it happened that there was a big dance and the two boys were at it. The king's daughter was there also and she danced with the eldest lad and soon fell in love with him.
They went to France and brought the young brother with them. They came back to Ireland again and the two boys presented the bird to the king again who lived in Ratheroghan and the king told them(continues on next page)- Collector
