- The stones for lime are dug in a limestone quarry They are broken up and draw to the kiln. A coal fire is lighted in the grate at the bottom. In the kiln itself there are layers of stones and colum, a layer of colum between each layer of stones. When the whole lot has burned out the lime is left behind.
