  2. Some years ago the thatcher was a busy man in every country district, as most of the houses were thatched.
    Turf was used as a foundation for the thatch. Then straw or rushes were used as thatch. These the thatcher made firm on the turf with "scollops" or pieces of sally sticks. He was very careful that the straws would all be facing the one way, towards the eaves of the roof, and that none of them
