    Famine times 9-11-38,
    The year before the Famine the people carted the potatoes into the ditches. There was no black potatoes in our district up to the famine. We were told the year before the famine two men started to dig our potatoes at daylight and would not have enough dug again one' o clock. We are told in our district that chief food was indail meal and turnips mixed up together. It was known that young men to work with farmers for there. The farmers refused to take them. The population in Kildare was far greater then it is now. A great number had to go to the unions 60 able body young men was marchedto Dublin and put into an Emigration ship and no - body knows where they went to nor they never got tale ortrace of one f them. It was supposed that the British let the ship out into the sea. We have edivance (let) of the country been populated the ruins of all houses and walls.
