- The light used in the district before the Tallow candles were known, and before the oil lamps were thought of, was what was called the "rush" light. The rushes were pulled beside a spring well or in a bog. The rushes were carefully pulled and steeped in grease for a day or two. When all the grease would be gripped on the would be left on the window to dry. Then they would light them as required. We light rushes made like that every Twelfth Night still.
