- In olden times the houses differed from the houses of to-day. They were small houses with one storey. The windows were very small. There were only four small panes in them and which were made in such a way that they would not open. Consequently the people had no ventilation.
The houses were thatched with straw and rushes.
The thatch was kept on by straw ropes. They had all a bed in the kitchen. It was kept between the window and the fire-place. The fire place was kept at the gable wall. The front of it was made of stone and mortar. A lot of houses had no chimneys.
They had only a box made like a creel set round the hole where the smoke(continues on next page)- Collector
