- Long ago the people had no lamps, paraffin oil, or even candles to show them light. They got fir chips which then split off planks of fir out of the bogs. They simply lit this chip in the fire and it showed good light while it lasted.Then they began to make another sort of light which was called "Rush Candles". To make those candles they required a good quantity of good strong firm rushes. The people got those rushes in the woods and cut them with little hooks. They took a few rushes at a time in their hands and called that a "geac".(continues on next page)
