The last person that any one living in this district at present remembers never to have woren shoes was a man named "Goidin" who lived in Castlebarnagh about three miles from the town of Swinford.
I heard Ml Salmon say that the children in his early days (that the children in his early) were more brainy than they are now for the simple reason that they never wore shoes until quite old fashioned.
All children like to walk on their bare feet in Summer, but like to wear clogs or shoes in Winter. The thicker the skin in the sole of the foot the harder the brains in the head of the child.
Not far from here is a very old doctor who did not allow his children wear boots
