In those days tea was a great luxury and was not used except by the wealthy. It was a great luxury to get a drink of tea at Christmas. Only comfortable families could afford to buy two ounces of tea for Christmas. The members of the family were treated with a cup of tea on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. The tea that was left over was kept for any sick person of the family during the year.
