is:that the vicarage of Kilmaley was united to Drumcliffe in 1802.Of course he is speaking of the Protestant arrangement, but there might be something in it.They might be perpetuating some old Catholic tradition.Who founded Drumcliff? It is the parish church and the oldest in the Drumcliff of Ennis parish. Kilbricken in Doora we know something about.Professor O'Looney (uncle of Thomas O'Looney who wrote about Mt.Callan and whose mother is Maley from Kilmaley. His cousin Dan Maley in Gurtaganniv at the present day)edited the Clare portion of the Monasticon Hibernian for Cardinal Moran as editor in chief ,then Bishop of Ossory. He speaks about the Abbey in Ennis, the ruins of the parish churches of Drumcliff,Doora and Kilbrickan-all of undoubted antiquity, but, not a word about Kilmaley.Máille was no doubt somebody of importance, because there is also Templemaley near Ennis is called after him .It is to be feared however ,that he has no biographer .Ennis is in the Barony of the Islands(Uí Chormaic)and so is Kilmaley and the baronies show even now the tribal settlements -a modern barony representing a Tuath prersided over by Rí Tuatha a petty king .Therefore probably Drumcliff and Kilmaley were founded about the same time and by the same people who founded Doora and Kilbrickan.

The Church in Kilmaley graveyard was supposed to be knocked down in Cromwell's time .There was a great battle fought in Davorn's field near the Chapel. The chalices are suppose to be buried near Mount Callan. The Friars lived in Davorn's field wherre the ash trees are still growing. The Friars used to grind corn for all the neighbours. After the church being knocked down Mas was said in various places especially in Buaile na gCléireach where they had a kind of a chapel or oratory. The Friars are supposed to have cursed Lios Bigín because this land was taken from them, and the Casey's the present owners are said to have no luck there since. There is a flag over some priest in Kilmaley graveyard and instead of being east it is turned westward towards the present chapel of Kilmaley. There was a thatched chapel in Kilmaley before the present one was built ,this is where Davorn's car house is now near Thomas Keane's .The people used to kneel in front of Keane's house while mass was being said in the cabin. At present John Davorn keeps his machinery in this house ,and it is still spoken of as the old chapel.

Old JOhn Boland (80 or 85 yeas of age then)told Rev.Fr Roche, P.P Kilmaley in 1920 or before it.(fr Roche .P P was then a curate in Kilmaley)that he used to hear his father talk about a chalice found in Salach Bhuaile .The chalice which was a pretty one ,had attached to it a pyx which had something withered in it (probably the Blessed Sacrament )fr Roche asked him what happened to this chalice, and he said a hedge schoolmaster who was in the district stole it,and sold it to Protestants .Fr.Roche also told me there was supposed to be a chalice in the Ennis protestant Church even at present called the "Kilmaley Chalice"Whether this is the same chalice or not he does not know, but it may be that whoever bought it presented it to the Ennis church.
  8. The Kilmaley Ghost

About seven miles from Ennis stands the parish of Kilmaley. Out in Kilmaley there is a ghost seen every evening after sunset by certain people. He is seen going into a certain house and taking a cup off the dresser to get a drink of water. The man off the house built a wall six feet high to try and keep out the ghost but it would be levelled to the ground in the morning. The ghost who is seen there is said to be an old minister who lived there long ago. He lived in a Protestant church and when he died the people took the stones off the church and build houses with them and ever after the ghost is seen there. The ghost is there sometimes in the form of a dog. Some off the people got mass said in their homes. Then the ghost stayed out of the houses but he never left Kilmaley. He is seen there every night. The people of Kilmaley never go out when it is dark because they are sure to meet the ghost. They always go out at sunset.

I never found anything bearing any saint or church founder "Maley".I found reason to think its ancient founder or patron was Screbhann the patron of Clonegad in popular legend. There seem to be no mention of any saint of the name in the Martyrologies and Calendars ."Qribanub"in Sweetman's calendar is very probably miscopied for Snibanus.I do not think Kilmaley is named in the Calendar of Papal
