    but a narrow strip of the skin was left on each rush, so that it would be strong enough to stand erect.
    Then some sheep's tallow was melted in a grisset and the peeled rushes were steeped in the melted tallow.
    They were left in the tallow until there were thoroughly impregnated with it. They were then taken out and allowed to dry. When they were dried they were stored until they were required. Each rush was about ten inches long.
