My father, tall and handsome Iain Gordon, was aye a wandering man, and a wandering man he died.

My father, tall and handsome Iain Gordon, was aye a wandering man and a wandering man he died. He was younger son of Gordon of Auchindoun in Scotland, Sept of Huntly and he had two loves in all his life: my mother, who died in his arms at Auchindoun and his sovereign, Mary Queen whose headless body he saw in the castle of Fotheringay. And that last love ruined his life and left me without a career.
