  1. There was an old hedge school in the town-land of Lahard. The master's name was "David Phair". He taught his pupils under the hedge along a by-road. They sat on wooden blocks while he taught them poetry and how to read an write. They wrote on slates with slate pencils.
    The master got no pay for teaching only what he got from the people around. Some gave him food and some gave him money.
