- In Olden times houses were built with mud walls, and were thatched with straw or heather. The floors were made of clay. Close to a wall of the kitchen there was a settle-bed it was used for a seat in the day time and for a bed at night. Some beds were made with a hood to the top. The farmers grew their own straw and got the heather off the hills to thatch their houses with.
