called the wren boys because they hunt the wren on that day. In some places young men go about playing a melodeon or some other musical instrument. They go from house to house singing the following rhyme
The wren, the wren, the king of all birds
On St. Stephens day she was caught in the furze
Although she is little, her family is great
Rise up landlady and give us a treat
And if the treat be of the best
I hope in Heaven your soul may rest,
Up with the kettle and down with the pan
Give us your answer and let us be on
She dipped her wing in a barrel of beer
We wish you a happy and bright new year.
