    One of the first national schools was established in Danescastle and was used as a school until 1898 when the present school was built.
    The teachers who taught in the hedge schools were strangers in the locality and they never remained long in one place.

  2. There were Hedge Schools in this district. The teachers lodged in the farmers' houses.
    The children paid a penny a week or in some cases 10/- a quarter if they could afford it.
    No Irish was taught to my remembrance in these times.
    The Books cost according to the Class thus 1d for a First Book 2d for 2nd Book + so on.
    Slates were they only medium of writing
