    In '96 when the moon did fix its beams o'er Scullabogue,
    The twinkling stars called the planet of Mars denoted each rogue
    Of Saxon's birth, amid the earth where Cromwells crew was slain,
    The yeomen fled and left their dead in Ballyshannon Lane

    II
    I pass James Moore's and the old forge door where young Evoy steeled the pike.
    The night was fine neither rain nor wind blew the hill or dyke.
    And at Furlong's gate where I did wait a thought flashed through my brain
    It was by a sword that young man died in Ballyshannon Lane.

    One night in June when the bright silvery moon shone its beams o'er Scullabogue,
    I sat on the stile for a while in the churchyard of old Courtdoyle.
    No scenes of '98 there wait to pierce my youthful brain
    I prayed for the dead and through Raheen fled from Ballyshannon Lane

    We were in Keatings bawn by the early dawn the barn it was
