    who came back first got another bottle of whiskey to drink.
    Another old custom which is in fashion still was the straw-boys. They have a big hood made of straw over their heads and pulled well down on their faces. They tie straw ropes around their waists. They dance and sing outside the house and if the people do not give them plenty of drink they do some mischief about the house such as letting cattle in on a field of corn or breaking a gate or knocking down a wall.
    As a rule matches are arranged by a third party called a matchmaker. Sometimes they do it for friendship, but most times the matchmaker expects to get money.
