  1. Long ago candles were made out of rushes. They used to peel the rushes and dry them and dip them in old fat or grease. They kept the rushes dry by the fire. Then when they wanted candles they dipped them in the fat They also had a large wooden candle stick about three feet high with a pinchers on the top made by the blacksmith to hold the candle
    Jack Sherry in Robinstown Navan makes gates. Patrick Markey who lived in Dundery Navan long ago made nice gates He also made fire grates and fire cranes
    Long ago blacksmiths made iron for clothes and gave them to the plough men to put a face on them. Dick Powderly Kilcarne is a noted tatcher and is very quick. A man in Athlumney Navan makes churnes barrels and firkins
    Larry Mc Loughlin who lived on the Commons Navan was a great linen weaver. He used to bleach it with ashes out ot ash sticks. Donnelly who lived in Ardbraccan Navan was a basket weaver Patrick Keenan Curraghtown Navan was a good linen weaver.
    Mary Boyle Commons Navan used to spin wool for knitting stockings. That wool would be white
