  2. Rev James Howard one of Father Meagher's curates was appointed Parish Priest in Newport in 1888. He was a native of Ballylanders and was educated in Thurles and afterwards in Maynooth. He was ordained in 1865 and went for six years in the mission to Sterling in Scotland. When recalled he was appointed curate in Ballinahinch whence he was transferred as curate to Newport. With the exception of about ten years he spent all his long priestly life amongst the people of Newport.
