    The labourer's act was composed
    To better our sad situation
    And pleasure and comfort disclosed.

    I wish the poor men of the nation
    From Cork to the County Tyrone
    Wee possessed of a cottage and acre
    They freely might call them their own.

    The comfort obtained from these houses
    Not to talk of the acre at all
    Each heart would resound with carouses
    As they guard off each wintry squall.
