    The three men went off one man to dig for the treasure. They went about midnight so as to have it unearthed before the sun rose. They dug a hole where the treasure was hidden and came to a large flag about [t?] feet below the surface. As they were trying to lift the flag a large [b?] came and stood near them. He looked at them so queerly that they were frightened and made off as quickly as they could, leaving the spades behind them.
    In the morning they found the spades placed in the shape of a cross in the corner of the house. The earth was put back again and the place looked as it it had never been disturbed.
