  1. The famine of 1847 affected this district greatly. The chief thing that led to it was the failure of the potato crop. The potato was an easy crop to grow and the people depended on it to give them sufficient food to feed them.
    This district was thickly populated before the famine but when the famine came the population died away. A blight came on the potatoes and before long the potatoes began to decay and a disease spread from them. Many people died from starvation and from the disease. Over a million people had to emigrate from Ireland to America. A woman lived near the church in Duntryleague the time of the famine and she was struck blind (by the famine fever). She died about ten years ago. Her sister was struck blind in one eye. Her father
