(That story may or may not be true, but this is quite true that the Lyonses of Croom House have been at all times princely benefactors of the Church in Croom. The present church was built on their land. Henry Lyons of Croom house offered £500 in 1849 to enlarge and re-roof the then church and for some reason it was not then done, but was later. When the renovations of an extensive nature were being done to the church some five years ago the present Capt. Lyons gave £500 towards the necessary fund. His wife was then alive. In the Fenian days Patrick Costelloe lived in Croom Cottage (This is the farmhouse beside and west of the Parochial House of Croom. It was occupied for some years prior to 1786 by the Parish Priest of Croom. In that year Fr. Laurence Hartnett Senr.
