    received Fionn and his companions and as soon as they were safely within the palace, he had them seized and imprisoned. When the other members of the Fianna returned and discovered that fate of their leader they at once attacked the Northmen. The battle at the ford was long and fierce. There were several challenges to single combat. Amongst those slain were Mioase himself and Fiacna the son of Fionn. In the end the Fianna won, the few of the enemy who were left fled to their ships in the Shannon, and Fionn and his companions were set free.
    Some years ago during excavations at the ford a number of weapons of pre-Norman date were discovered. Gort Colgain was an ancient name for Ballingarry.
