    by the smiths themselves to Kilmallock.
    The smiths shoe horses chiefly, and sometimes asses. They also repair machinery. The farmers on the coming of spring bring their machines to be repaired there.
    People sometimes send gifts to the smiths. The filings of the steel that the smith files is supposed to banish rats.
    The local forge is a great centre for storytelling. All the local gossip is talked out there and there is a local phrase. “It was going on at the forge”.
