  1. Industries – Brickmaking (Belvelly)
Mrs Mary Butler 84 years. Born Lisgoold, Midleton, Spent greater portion of life in Belvelly.
At the Pottery Cross Belvelly are the ruins of its one time industry – brick manufacture. The clay was dug from the clay hole near and was carried in waggons – a few hundred yards to the Pottery. There it was Rolled on Rollers and cut with tin wires.
Then it was burned and dried and finally fit for use. The bricks were shipped to Cork and elsewhere from a little jetty built below Belvelly Bridge (western side) remains of which are still visible. Wages of men employed were £1.10.0 per week. The old chimney fell in 1902 but another was built which still remains. In 1914 it was closed – men were expected to join the ranks and fight in the Great War. Before this, fault was found with the bricks – too brittle and rough surfaced. [This industry was found by the late Lord Barrymore died 1925].
