    on whose land the fair-field was, held the right to collect the tolls. They were collected only on animals that were sold as they left the fair. In the case of unsold animals no custom was charged; the owners or drivers of the latter animals indicated this to the toll collectors by putting their hands on a board which stood beside the fair field gap. From the writing on this board the touching of it on such an occasion by the person in charge of the cattle was equal to taking an oath that the cattle were unsold.
