  1. Before Lombardstown Creamery was established in this parish (Kilshannig, near Mallow, Co. Cork) every farmer's wife made butter in her own home.
    It sometimes happened that butter could not be made no matter how long the churning process was continued. In those cases the parties who failed to make the butter ascribed the cause to "Pishogues" practised on them by some neighbour and the general belief was that May Day morning or the night previous was the time at which the pishogues were "made".
    Many stories were told about the "carrying of the butter" as it was called. The following is one of these :-
