  1. Alas, Alas, I'm in this cell,
Chained hand and foot as if in hell,
My crimes from home me long have driven,
Yet God has worse than me forgiven.

Tis vain I know for those in power,
To think that long in incarceration,
Works in human beings like me,
    The slightest tinge of reformation.

My crimes when first, me here had sent,
Some thought worse lived not in creation,
A Saint was I to what I'll be,
When let at large upon the nation.
Written while in Spike prison 1869.
