    alternately on the ends of this cross. The players blindfolded and with their hands tied behind them made an attempt to catch one of the apples in their mouths, very often it was a candle they bite at much to the amusement of the onlookers.
    It was the custom for all to sit round the table in the centre of which a knife was placed. One of the players then called out “Who is the liar”, and he spun the knife round. Who ever the knife stopped opposite, that person was said to be “The Liar”.
