No one would give a light of the house May morning for fear of giving away the good of the milk or the luck of the year.
A donkey is supposed to be kept on every farm to bring luck & the animal has a good time for many years.
It is most unlucky to meet a foxey woman as the first person on May morning. A dark man is supposed to be a sign of luck.

The both stopped & bid each other the “time of day” Harris said I’m going back into bed now. I met a foxey woman above in the lane & I’ll never have any luck now So he did go to bed & never left it since
